Abernathy with other crewmembers
The formation was attacked by 12 FW-190's on the return from target. Barfly was shot
down and crashed near Meltofte, 1km south of the highway that goes between
Nakskov and Maribo in Denmark. Boyd's body was recovered May 21, NE of Urne
near Nakskov. He was buried in the cemetery in Svino and later reinterred in North
Carolina. Julius' body washed up on shore, July 12, 1944 near Agerso. He was buried
in the cemetery at Korsor and later reinterredin the USA. Craighead's body was
recovered May 31, 1944 on the beach at Tjorneby, north of Laaland. He was buried in
Svino and later reinterred at the American Cemetery in the Ardennes. Parker's body
was recovered and buried in New Cemetery at Dannemare/Laaland. He was
reinterred at the cemetery in the Ardennes. Raley was killed in the air by a 20mm
shell. he was buried in the cemetery at Saving on April 13, 1944 and also reinterred
in the Ardennes. Abernathy is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing in
Cambridge. Hopper was wounded and taken prisoner to the hospital at Nakskow.
Brand, Nunan, and Meese were captured on a bridge between Laaland and Falster
on the night of April16.
